Short version. Sip Water has no user accounts, no backend, no analytics SDK, no advertising, no crash reporter and no networking code of any kind. Everything you log stays in storage on your own device. The only data that moves anywhere moves between you and Apple: into the Health app if you turn that on, and to your own paired Apple Watch. We never receive any of it, which also means we cannot access, export or restore it for you.
1. Who we are
Sip Water is published by Delta Metrics LLC ("Delta Metrics", "we", "us"), Los Angeles, California, USA. For the purposes of the GDPR and similar laws, Delta Metrics LLC would be the data controller — but as set out below, Sip Water does not transmit personal data to us, so in practice we hold none of it. You can reach us at [email protected].
This policy covers Sip Water and its Apple Watch app and widgets. Our other apps collect different data and have their own policies: Sip and Sip Vino.
2. What the app stores, and where
Sip Water keeps a single record on your device, inside the app's own private container (an iOS App Group, shared only with the app's own widgets and watch app). It holds:
- Drinks you log — amount, drink type, and the time you logged it.
- Your cups — the built-in ones plus any custom cup you create (name, size, drink type, icon, colour).
- About you — body weight, date of birth and biological sex, either typed in by you or read from Apple Health, used to calculate your daily goal.
- Your settings — units, any manual goal override, reminder interval and quiet hours, and whether each Apple Health direction is enabled.
- Day feedback — your "still thirsty / felt good / too much" answers, which adjust future goals.
There is no account, no username, no email address, no password and no device identifier attached to any of this. It is not sent to us and it is not sent to anyone else.
3. Apple Health (HealthKit)
Apple Health is optional and off by default, in both directions, and each direction is a separate switch in Settings. The system permission prompt only appears when you turn one on — never at launch.
What it reads, if you allow reading
- Body mass — the most recent sample, to size your baseline goal.
- Date of birth and biological sex — to band that baseline by age and adjust it.
- Step count — today's total, for the activity allowance.
- Workouts — today's logged workout minutes, for the same allowance.
- Water intake — read access is requested so the app can see existing water samples; the current version does not display them.
What it writes, if you allow writing
One thing: the drinks you log, saved as Water (dietary water) samples. Deleting a drink in Sip Water deletes the corresponding Health sample too. The app does not write caffeine, electrolytes, workouts, body measurements or anything else into Health.
Health data read by the app is used on your device to calculate your goal and is not transmitted anywhere. We do not request access to clinical records. Note that if you have enabled Health in iCloud, Apple syncs your Health database to your iCloud account — that is a setting between you and Apple, outside this app's control.
4. Apple Watch
If you use the Apple Watch app, your log is kept in sync between the iPhone and the watch using Apple's WatchConnectivity framework. This is a direct device-to-device link between two devices you own. It does not pass through our servers, because we do not have any. The watch app does not use Apple Health itself; the iPhone handles that, so a drink logged on the watch is written to Health once, not twice.
5. What the app does not do
These are statements about how the app is built, not just promises about our intentions:
- No backend and no network calls. The app contains no networking code and links no networking framework. It cannot contact a server.
- No accounts. There is no sign-up, sign-in, email, phone number or password.
- No analytics. No PostHog, no Firebase Analytics, no Amplitude, Mixpanel or anything comparable.
- No crash reporting. No Crashlytics, no Sentry. We find out about bugs when you email us.
- No advertising and no tracking. No ad SDKs, no advertising identifier, no tracking domains. The app's privacy manifest declares tracking as false, with an empty list of tracking domains.
- No third-party SDKs at all. The project has no third-party package dependencies.
- No push notifications. The app has no push entitlement; the reminders described below are scheduled locally.
- No in-app purchases, subscriptions or payments.
- No location access. Weather, climate and location are not inputs to anything.
- No data sold or shared. There is nothing to sell, because nothing reaches us.
6. Reminders
Reminders are off by default and are local notifications scheduled by your own device. Permission is requested only at the moment you turn them on. You choose the interval and the quiet hours. No reminder is triggered or delivered by a server.
7. Your rights, and deleting your data
Under the GDPR, the CCPA/CPRA and similar laws you have rights of access, correction, deletion, portability, objection and restriction over personal data a company holds about you. We hold no personal data from Sip Water, so there is nothing for us to hand over, correct or erase, and no account for us to close.
You stay in full control of the data on your device:
- Delete a single drink — press and hold it in today's list.
- Delete everything — delete the app. iOS removes its container, including the hydration log, with it.
- Revoke Apple Health access — Health app → Sharing → Apps, or iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health.
- Remove data already written to Health — delete those samples in the Health app; data in Health is governed by Apple, not by us.
- Backups — if you back your iPhone up to iCloud or a computer, Sip Water's data is included in that backup. Those backups belong to you and Apple; we have no access to them.
Because we have no copy, deleting the app is permanent. We cannot restore a hydration log, and we cannot move one to a new phone other than through your own device backup.
If you want to exercise a data right anyway, or just want this in writing, email [email protected] and we will respond within 30 days.
8. Children
Sip Water is a general-audience health and fitness app and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, of any age, because the app does not transmit personal information at all. The goal calculation includes an under-18 band for completeness, but this app is not a paediatric tool and should not be used to manage a child's fluid intake.
9. Security
Your data is protected by the security of your own device: iOS file protection and whatever passcode, Face ID or Touch ID you use. Because nothing is transmitted, there is no data in transit to intercept and no server-side database of ours to breach. If you lose the device or it is not protected by a passcode, someone with physical access to it could see your hydration log in the app.
10. Changes to this policy
If a future version of Sip Water adds anything that leaves the device — sync, an account, an export, analytics — we will update this policy before that version ships, change the "Effective" date above, and describe what changed. Continued use of the app after a change takes effect means you accept it.
